Abstract

Thirty-five male Wistar albino rats weighing 80-100 g were subtotally pancreatectomized according to the method of Foglia and were killed at different intervals after the operation. In the islets of Langerhans there can be seen two kinds of cells containing in their cytoplasm both granules of the beta type and others looking like zymogen.

The cell membranes of the first kind of cells seem to be damaged seriously as a consequence of squeezing effects during the cutting of unfixed tissue. As to the second kind, beta cells with well preserved cell membranes show signs of a disturbed cell metabolism. Because of some reasons it seems doubtful whether the large granules in these cells can be identified as zymogen granules. We do not find any proof of a formation of new functioning beta cells by a transformation of acinar cells.
